No. 63
Concept

The Reader's Problem

Nonfiction / Fiction. Creating an active want in the reader through features, not explanation.

Setup

Think of an opening paragraph to a story, essay, or scene. What kind of problem will your target reader care about?

Goal

Capture: Engagement — the most fundamental engagement move; also Filter: the opening paragraph filters by what it makes the reader want.

Constraints — all at once
  1. 1 Do not position the problem as a problem. No questions. No words like "mystery", or "secret".
  2. 2 Focus on the features of the situation to create a sense of something missing or not quite fitting.
  3. 3 One long paragraph.
Reflection

What did you put on the page that made the reader want something? Can you name the move, or was it intuitive?
